In 1817, New York Governor Dewitt Clinton convinced the state legislature to provide $7 million for the construction of the 363-mile Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie and the Atlantic Ocean.
Opened in 1825, the Erie Canal was the engineering marvel of the 19th Century. Today, visitors can experience the rich history of the Erie Canal on a two-hour Lockport Locks and Erie Canal cruise along the canal and Lockport’s fully-operational “Flight of Five” locks.
Visitors of all ages will enjoy an historic guided walking and boat tour on the Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride through a man-made underground power tunnel.
Wine connoisseurs and romance travelers will enjoy a day traveling along the Niagara Wine Trail in the Canal Region of Niagara USA. The Niagara Wine Trail offers six unique, award-winning wineries nestled between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario.
Take a romantic stroll along the Erie Canal in the City of Lockport, stopping to browse one of the Market Street Art Center’s two art galleries or over 20 artist studios.
