On Monday, January 21, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Dreamtime Entertainment and Florida Rep are partnering for a special screening in the Historic Arcade Theatre. All seats are $25, and all proceeds will benefit Florida Rep and Florida Rep’s Education Department, which reaches over 15,000 young people annually with free performances, Lunchbox Theatre, Touring Theatre Programs, classes and Camp Florida Rep.

“This is a very exciting event,” says Florida Rep Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo, “we’re proud to premiere this documentary in Southwest Florida.” Her story spans a generation of cultural changes, challenges and African American heritage.

Norma Miller was a swing dancer, an award-winning choreographer, a show producer, a stand up comedienne, a TV & film actress and an author. At a time of civil strife in America, the birth of jazz music and new black dance forms played an important role in breaking down the barriers to racial equality – and Norma Miller was at the center of that Cultural Revolution.

Queen of Swing is a historical biography of Ms. Miller’s remarkable life. It also provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the larger-than-life personalities of the jazz era. Among Norma’s family of friends are Louis Armstrong, Count Bassie, Duke Ellington, Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor, to name a few.

This important story is being told for the first time, and through this film it becomes clear that Norma Miller is true American royalty, who will no doubt serve as a role model for generations to come. Queen of Swing is dedicated to bringing people of all races and religions together to celebrate the things that make us all swing…jazz music and dance.

“Norma’s story is one we can all learn from,” says film director, John Biffar. “She shows us how we can overcome incredible odds with a positive attitude and a little bit of love.”

Queen of Swing will be shown at Florida Repertory Theatre in the Historic Arcade Theatre on Monday, January 21 at 7pm with a 6pm reception. The reception is catered by Shannon Yates and Cru, and Ms. Miller will be in attendance. All seats are $25 and include the Pre Show Reception. Proceeds will benefit Florida Rep and Florida Rep’s Education Department.
