Project Toga

Florida Repertory Theatre is proud to announce the Toga Design Contest as part of its annual fundraising event, Roman Forum 2008.

On Saturday, March 1, Bay St., in the Fort Myers River District, will be transformed into a Roman Forum complete with food, wine, dancers, silent and live auctions, and now, models showcasing themed togas designed and sponsored by local business partners.

Historic Arcade Theatre

The contest will feature togas designed by Florida Weekly, Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Hotel Indigo, Salon Nicholas, Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, Gora McGahey, Abbott Productions, Wilbur Smith and Florida Rep. Each toga will have a theme specific to the business or person designing, and will be displayed on a live Roman Statue displayed along Bay Street.

The models provided by Florida Rep will be painted as marble statues, displayed on a pedestal and, in addition to the designer toga, will feature hair design by Red Salon and Day Spa.

"It really is a creative and fun way for businesses to be involved with the event," said Rachel Burttram, Director of Audience Development, "and the guests will decide which toga is the winner."

Guests at Roman Forum 2008 will vote for their favorite toga design by dropping gold coins into urns at the models' feet, and the winner will be determined by which model has the most gold coins. "There are some very unique design ideas coming in," said Burttram, "and some of them are going to be just breathtaking."

The event also features very extensive and extravagant silent and live auctions where some of the more exclusive designs will be auctioned off, including a hand-painted silk toga designed by the Edison & Ford Winter Estates.

The Toga Party theme embraces everything from Ancient Rome to the college fraternity party scene. On one end of Bay Street guests will sample wine and spirits, party at the frat house with the boys of Delta Theta on the other end, and right in the center of it all, dance under torchlight in the Roman Coliseum.
