Every summer the arts spring to life in the Flathead, thanks to symphonies, acting companies and municipalities that bring music, drama and melody to this greenest of seasons. No other area offers this unique blend of landscape and local creativity.

With the trio of cities—Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Whitefish—all offering their own concert series, the hills are alive with music, theater or symphony.

Columbia Falls and Bigfork fill summer evenings with music. Enjoy your music as the sun sets against the mountains and big band sounds waft evening breezes. Columbia Falls kicks things off with the Thursday Night Summer Concert Series. The series takes place under the Don Lawrence Bandshell at Marantette Park and runs from June through August—the music starts at 8 p.m. Bigfork brings orchestra, rock and a whole lot more to the river with their Riverbend Concert Series. Enjoy all types of music at Riverbend Park where the music starts at 8 p.m.

Fill your days with summer’s melodies in Kalispell and Whitefish. Kalispell blends music with picnics for their Picnic in the Park concerts. Bring your red-and-white checkered blanket, have lunch and take a noontime break to bluegrass, rock, jazz and even big band sounds. It all begins just as summer goes into high gear, June 30—August 19. Whitefish mixes music and the market at their local downtown Farmer’s Market. Thursdays, from 4- 6 p.m. at Depot Park.

If the full-bodied sounds of an orchestra are more to your liking, Glacier Symphony & Chorale brings symphony to the best places in the Flathead—starting with an outdoor concert on July 10 under pavilion and beside Flathead Lake in Bigfork. All ages are welcome; the concert begins at 7:30 p.m. The next night they take music to the area’s utmost equestrienne center—Rebecca Farms. Enjoy the shade of tents, rolling lawns and all the food and fun you can bring. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7:30 p.m.

The crown of concerts takes place in the heart of summer as Festival Amadeus and the Glacier Symphony & Chorale celebrates the world’s greatest composer—Mozart—for five straight days. Whitefish hosts this event—and the international line up keeps the music going day and night. Kids music camps, meet and greet with musicians, food and fun are all part of the event.

If acting gets your heart going, then Alpine Theatre’s line up of musicals, comedies and cabarets will satisfy. From classic Broadway to more contemporary theatre, the depth of Flathead acting is on display in Whitefish. Shows run June through August and feature everything from a musical based on the pressures and angst of a spelling bee (“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”) or what happens when Hollywood overruns a small Irish village (“Stones in His Pockets”). The season concludes with the musical that launched Liza Minelli’s career—“The World Goes Round”. This best of Broadway showstopper will bring flash and glitz to the summer and the stage.

With so much live entertainment filling Flathead’s summer; your days and nights will bloom with the arts. For information on these and other summertime events, visit the Flathead Convention & Visitors Bureau on the web at www.montanasflatheadvalley.com
